Former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Thomas Homan told Fox News on Sunday that President Trump had made the right decision by replacing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen with the US Commissioner for Homeland Security. Customs and Border Protection, Kevin McAleenan.

Homan, a contributor to Fox News, called McAleenan one of the smartest men he has worked with.

"He knows border problems, and he can take the lead," Homan told Jon Scott about "Fox Report". "He knows the border … he will start the first day."

TRUMP DECLARES "THE COUNTRY IS COMPLETE" IN THE INTERVIEW OF FOX NEWS, SAYS WE CAN NOT ACCEPT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Nielsen resigned Sunday amid growing government frustration at migrants approaching the Mexican border.

Trump thanked her for her work in a tweet and announced that McAleenan would assume the role of acting head of the department. McAleenan is a long-time border official respected by members of Congress and Administration. The decision to appoint an immigration officer to this position reflects Trump's priority for a sprawling department founded to fight terrorism after the September 11 attacks.

Homan said he had blamed Congress and current US law for the border crisis: "We urge people to come."

However, he noted that McAleenan was the kind of man who could tackle the new wave of migration, which was taxing resources along the border.

"It will go off the beaten track," said Homan. "Kevin will put his foot on the gas."
