AUGUSTA, Georgia – Tiger Woods' preparations for the Masters already included two nine-hole rounds as well as a full test session last week during which he had shot 65 goals at Augusta National.
Woods, 43, a four-time tournament winner, left the course Monday before 11 am before heading to the practice area. He played the last nine with Fred Couples and Justin Thomas. He arrived late Sunday afternoon and went directly to the course with only one putter and one bevel. He had spent about three hours on the front nine, shooting 75 meters and working on his short game.
Bad weather is expected on Mondays and Tuesdays at the end of the day, which could reduce practice time.
Woods also came to Augusta National last Wednesday from his home in Florida and spent the day on the site, playing 18 holes and shooting a 65, which included a three-shot throws at the first green. Jeff Knox, a member of Augusta, was part of the round for nine holes, as did Rob McNamara, vice president of Woods' TGR Ventures, who spent all 18 holes with Woods and two caddies Augusta National Councils.
Woods makes his 22nd appearance at the Masters, which dates back to his first in 1995 as an amateur. In addition to his four wins, Woods has 13 more places in the top 10, his last draw in fourth place in 2013. Woods missed the tournament in 2014, 2016 and 2017 because of back problems and was tied for 32nd place last year.
He will play in the first round on Thursday, ranked 12th in the world, after a tie for fifth place at the WGC-Dell Match-Match Technologies Championship, one of his five tournaments starting in 2019.
