Friendly & # 39; s closed four restaurants located in Lancaster, Amherst, Hamburg and Jamestown, among the 23 establishments owned by businesses that the chain has shut down in the Northeast and New England.
The four restaurants in the area that have closed are:
• 6651 Transit Road, Lancaster, just north of Thruway
• 4350 Maple Road, Amherst, near the University of Buffalo North Campus
• 3540 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg, near McKinley Shopping Center
• 10 St. S. Main, Jamestown.
George Michel, CEO of the Massachusetts chain, sent a letter to the franchisees explaining the decision. Employees at the now-closed premises received a personal notification, said Hannah Arnold, a spokesperson.
"The company is striving to support them by offering them opportunities on other sites, severance pay and other forms of assistance," Arnold said.
In his letter to the franchisees, Michel stated that Friendly & # 39; s closed 14 restaurants in upstate New York, three in Massachusetts, three in Connecticut, two in New Hampshire and one in the Maine.
In his letter, Michel said that Friendly & # 39; s had evaluated its network of company-owned restaurants, "with an eye on its viability and maximizing its investments in resources".
"Although this decision was difficult, we are confident that this will better position the brand for a promising future," Michel wrote about the closures.
After closing, Friendly will have 77 company-owned restaurants and 97 franchise-owned restaurants, he said.
The restaurant's online database indicates that the only remaining Friendly & # 39; s West of New York is in Olean.
