Baltimore City Council on Monday urged Mayor Catherine Pugh (D) to resign following an ongoing scandal involving the sale of children's books that she herself had published.
In a letter signed by the 14 members, the city council called Pugh to resign immediately.
"This unprecedented step was not taken lightly," said Councilor Eric Costello, representative of the city's 11th district, in a tweet. "While I fully support the notion of" innocent until proven innocent ", I remain deeply concerned about the immeasurable toll this scandal has inflicted on the city of Baltimore and its citizens."

"Baltimore will continue to have a cloud over his head as Mayor Pugh's business relations investigations continue," said City Councilman Brandon Scott, the city's second district representative. of Baltimore.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Pugh earned $ 500,000 when the University of Maryland's medical system, of which she sat on the board, purchased 100,000 copies of her "Healthy Holly" children's books, according to the Baltimore Sun . Between 2005 and 2018, Kaiser Permanente paid about $ 114,000 for 20,000 copies of books, including while the company was bidding for a contract with the city.
Pugh, who was elected in 2016, announced last week an unlimited leave, which, according to his office, was aimed at curing pneumonia.
Pugh's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.
