Last week, we had the first appearance of Google Pixel 4 in the Open Source Android Project (or AOSP), which gave us a pretty clear indicator that the device was under development and maybe already in some (but not all). The hands of Google developers. Today, the Google Pixel 4 has resurfaced in the AOSP, this time side by side with the Pixel 3a leaked continuously.
A new code change was released today in the management of Android Gerrit source code, initially under the heading "Disable Preloading Drivers for Pixel 3a and 4". The two new devices are also referenced in the validation message, next to Pixel 2 and Pixel 3.
ANGLE requires preloading of the driver to be disabled. This has been done for pixels 2 and 3 and must be done for 3a and 4 as well.
For reference, ANGLE is the "almost native graphics layer engine," developed by Google to make the graphical code more compatible between different types of devices. Some aspects of ANGLE support on Pixel devices require that the graphics driver is not "preloaded," and this code change makes it easy for Google to disable preloading.
The code in the commit itself unfortunately reveals very little information about one or the other device, as this change intended for the public is apparently required before you can correctly adjust pixels 3a and 4 in the internal and private Google Android code.
What we can learn from this code change is that the Pixel 4 hardware is, as we can expect, already in the hands of some Googlers for the development of some Android features. This would explain why last week's commit developer apparently lamented his lack of Pixel 4 hardware for testing features.
Unfortunately, we still have not learned Pixel 4, it's his code name. Neither this code nor the one discovered last week reveals the namesake Aquatic of Pixel 4. The code name itself will probably not reveal much, but it can sometimes be essential to discover the information on Android devices directly from Google, as we saw with the Pixel 3a specifications that appear in the Google Play Developer Console under the code names "Bonito" and "Sargo".
