WASHINGTON – California representative Eric Swalwell will become the last Democrat to run in the 2020 presidential race on Monday night in an appearance in "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert".
"I see a country in the quicksand, unable to solve problems and threats from abroad, unable to improve the lives of people here at home, nothing is being done," Swalwell said. in a statement. clip published early by the show. "The Late Show" aired the clip on Twitter a few hours before the broadcast of the show. Swalwell also filed documents with the Federal Election Commission to formally set up a presidential campaign committee.
Swalwell, a member of the 38-year-old House Audit Committee, plays an important role in Russian interference in US elections and other Trump administration relations investigations with foreign powers.
Swalwell also placed gun control at the center of his career and is scheduled to hold a city hall Tuesday in Parkland, Florida, the location of the 2018 mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Cameron Kasky, a survivor of the shooting that became active in the March For Our Lives movement for gun safety, was the guest of the congressman during the state's speech on the subject of gunfire. Union of President Donald Trump and Swalwell wrote an editorial last year saying that he was inspired by the movement.
Swalwell, who was the only congressman to support Martin O'Malley in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries, is the 15th major entry-race candidate in the 2020 race and will have a steep climb as he is much unknown at the moment.
The Californian was elected to the House of Commons in 2012 after defeating former Democrat Pete Stark, who has been in power for 40 years, in a bitter primary battle. Stark refused to discuss his rival, which led Swalwell to hire an actor to pretend to be himself and only talk about Stark's actual quotes, while wearing fuzzy gray eyebrows.
As Swalwell has already reminded early caucus members, he was born in Sac City, Iowa, before his family settled in California. He studied law at the University of Maryland before working at Capitol Hill, then returning to California to become a solicitor and occupy other local positions.
Swalwell has been a regular presence in Iowa and in other early states' primaries and caucuses and has recruited staff to prepare for a possible candidacy for the presidency.
