the Chicago Cubs beat the Pirates of Pittsburgh in what was a delightful pen projection during the home opener at Wrigley.
Ben Zobrist led the match with a march against the Pirates starter Jameson Taillon but would not come to mark, with Kris Bryant align short, Anthony Rizzo swinging, and Javier Báez striking out.
Jon Lester started on the mound and got two withdrawals as a result of Adam Frazier and Starling Marte. Francisco Cervelli walk, but no damage has been done, as Josh Bell put down by Cervelli on second base to end the run.
The Cubs crammed into the second set. Daniel Descalso reached on an error throwing by Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman with two outs, and Taillon then made the mistake of walking intentionally Jason Heyward to Lester. Lester responded with a doubled RBI to put the Cubs in place 1-0. The round would end with the Cubs ahead 6-0 after the RBI singles of Zobrist, Rizzo and Báez; as well as another error from Newman that allowed Rizzo to score with Kyle Schwarber at bat
Lester seemed timidly tossing to the top of the third and only meeting one batter, Steven Brault (which had come into play in relief of Taillon). Brault chooses to the right and Lester then leaves the match because of his stiffness in his left thigh. Brad Brach resumed the shot and pushed Marte to play in 6-4-3 double play and Cervelli to hit.
While Brault was now pitting for the Pirates, Descalso was doubling in the left corner of the field, followed by a walk to Heyward. Brach hesitated to charge the goals and Descalso scored Zobrist for a double game. Bryant then followed with a double to score Heyward and put the Cubs in place 8-0. The round ended with a withdrawal from Rizzo's goals.
Schwarber added two more points for the kids with a home run in the fourth inning, bringing the score to 10-0.
David Bote entered the game for the Cubs in the fifth, replacing Descalso, and Brandon Kintzler came to launch. Kintzler made Brault look out, an alignment of Frazier, then hit Marte with a throw. The round ended with a withdrawal of Jacob Stallings, who came in relief from Cervelli to the catcher.
Stallings stayed in the game for the Pirates in the bottom of the fifth, and Jason Martin entered the game instead of Melky Cabrera in the right field and Pablo Reyes moved from left to right field. Bote s' aligned, Zobrist walked, Bryant squeezed into a force, and Rizzo had another withdrawal.
Kintzler worked a 1-2-3 run in the sixth with some Bell outsiders Jung-ho Kang, and Martin.
Francisco Liriano launched for pirates in the sixth and Colin Moran replaced Kang at the third base. Liriano also had a 1-2-3 run, with a withdrawal from Báez's goals, a left flyout for Schwarer and another withdrawal from goals from Willson Contreras.
Randy Rosario took the mound to the seventh, Albert Almora Jr entered the central field, and Mark Zagunis came to play on the right court. Rosario received a flyout from Reyes, a Moran roster in first and a defender from Frazier that he easily made it to the front row for the third outing.
New Pitcher Pitcher Nick Burdi faces Bryant, Victor Caratini (who had replaced Rizzo at the top of the inning) and Báez in the eighth, all of whom hit.
Pedro Strop ends the game for the Cubs and gives a first single to Martin. Pinch Hitter JB Shuck Replaced Reyes and walked. Newman then hit hard, and Moran started a double game to end the game.
What a relief to see the office take over early and cross! The Cubs have won again as a result of an offensive blast during a big home opening game. Aside from Lester's injury, of course, but I hope this will be resolved before his next departure.
