CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Police at North Carolina's flagship public university announced the arrest of two people accused of vandalizing a monument dedicated to slave and free black workers who built the school.
According to the University of North Carolina police, Ryan Francis Barnett, 31, of Sanford, and Nancy Rushton McCorkle, 50, of Newberry, South Carolina, were arrested on Monday. They face charges of property damage and ethnic intimidation.
Neither had listed the phone numbers.
They are accused of marking the Unsung Founders Memorial last month with what the Acting Chancellor of the Chapel Hill Campus has termed "racist language".
The memorial is on a central square where also features the statue of a Confederate soldier before the protesters destroyed it in August.
