According to the authorities, the doors of the car were allegedly chained, apparently by the father of the child.

Fire officials found Zoey Pereira in the back seat of the burning vehicle at Queens Sunday night.

The firefighters managed to get the girl out of the car, but she died as a result of her injuries.

There were two gas cans and a propane tank inside the car, the firefighters said.

"The man had fled while the vehicle was on fire and a search was made and found a short distance away," said the dep. Chief Joseph Gallucci of the New York Police Department.

One witness said that the man identified as the father of the girl, a 39-year-old man whose name was not disclosed, was also injured in the fire.

The man, who suffered burns all over his body, was arrested and transported to hospital in critical but stable condition.

He has not yet been charged, but the police are investigating the incident as a homicide, they said.
