The mother of the 5-year-old girl who survived what appears to be her father's suicide-killing attempt said that she knew something was wrong after receiving a call from Fernando Balbuena a few moments before his fateful passage in front of a New York subway. .
Balbuena called Niurka Caraballo around 8 am Monday morning, after leaving their apartment in the Bronx. Caraballo, according to the child's godfather, "felt that something was really wrong."

"She could not understand what he was saying. The godfather of the couple's son, Luis Sanchez, told Caraballo's Carrefour New York Post. "She felt that something was wrong, so she ran to the train."

Caraballo rushed to the station, but it was too late. Balbuena, 45, jumped in front of a No. 4 train heading south to Kingsbridge Road Station with their 5-year-old daughter in her arms. Emergency responders declared the father dead on the scene.
The child miraculously survived – and a dramatic video taken at the scene captured the girl who was crawling under the train and the moment a man pulled her to put her at the shelter. She was then taken to hospital for treatment, according to WABC-TV.
Caraballo told the post that Balbuena was suffering from depression, but that she "had no idea", adding: "He was a good husband, a good father, a good provider and a good man."

Caraballo told the press that the five-year-old girl did not realize what had happened to Balbuena and that she "was asking for her father," said Tuesday outside his home in the Bronx.
"We give her a lot of love, so she's good," said the mother.
