The heartbreaking story of an unborn baby cut off from his mother's abdomen became even more tragic.

Authorities said the boy had died Friday after spending more than seven weeks in the hospital.

The baby's mother, Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, was 9 months pregnant when she was killed, which, according to the police, arrived on April 23 when she responded to a Facebook post offering free clothes for baby.

His assailants cut off the child from his body and took the newborn to a local hospital, claiming that it was theirs.

The child, whom the family later called Yovanny Jadiel Lopez, was treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a Chicago area hospital.

The ABC WLS station reported that the hospital had contacted the state's Department of Child and Family Services on May 9, more than two weeks after the baby had been greeted for the first time to the hospital.

According to the Associated Press, the child has received life support, and prosecutors have previously described the newborn in a serious condition with no brain activity.

A spokesman for the family announced the baby's death on Friday morning, saying in a statement that the death was attributed to his "serious brain injury".

"Please, keep her family in your thoughts and prayers while she's going through a difficult time," the family said in a statement.

Private funerals will be held.

The remains of Ochoa-Lopez, who was 19 at the time of his death, were found at the homes of his alleged attackers.

Clarisa and Desiree Figueroa, a mother-daughter couple, have been charged with murder, while Piotr Bobak, a 40-year-old boyfriend of 40-year-old Clarisa Figueroa, has been accused of helping to conceal the alleged crime. All three appeared in Cook County Court in mid-May and were denied bail.
