The Nashville Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to a fire at Hickory Lake Apartments in Nashville and had discovered thick smoke and flames from one of the units, Nashville reported in a statement. Press release.
Five children aged 1 to 6 – including four siblings – were rescued and taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, the city said.
The 8-month-old child, identified as Jream Jenkins, died on the scene, according to the press release. His 23-month-old brother is in critical condition. Both children lived in the apartment, according to the release.
According to the press release, mothers of children, aged 23 and 25, went to a nightclub on Saturday night, but it is unclear whether they arranged for babysitting. No women have been appointed by the authorities.
There was no babysitter in the apartment when the first responders arrived, the statement said.
Two passers-by called the authorities after the fire and reported seeing a 6-year-old boy run out of the apartment shouting that his siblings were inside, the statement said.
The mothers returned to the apartment complex after the first responders were already on the scene, the statement said.
Investigators from several agencies, including the Nashville Fire Marshal's Office, the North Police District's northern police district and the Tennessee Department of Children's Service, are trying to determine what has happened.
