A Baltimore teenager believed to be detained at home last year when he crushed a police officer in a stolen jeep was sentenced Wednesday to life imprisonment.
Dawnta Harris, 17, was tried in adulthood and sentenced earlier this year to the murder of police officer Amy Caprio, a Baltimore County police officer, in May 2018. On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Teenager to life imprisonment in more than 20 years of burglary.
"Amy was killed needlessly and ruthlessly," said the victim's husband, Tim Caprio.

The 29-year-old policewoman was responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle when she met Harris in what would later be identified as a stolen Jeep. Bodycam images of the incident showed Caprio screaming at the teenager to get out of the vehicle.

At one point, she pulls her gun and yells at Harris: "Stop! Stop! Before he lowers his head, he accelerates and strikes it violently.
Caprio managed to shoot a round, which broke the windshield of the Jeep. Residents of the suburbs of Baltimore reportedly found the bloody agent and tire marks on their legs. She had broken ribs and injuries to the internal organs.
Police said Harris had abandoned the jeep several blocks.

The authorities in Baltimore were strongly criticized for Caprio's death after it appeared that Harris was awaiting conviction in another car theft case at the time of the murder. He was, however, allowed to remain under house arrest despite a series of previous arrests for car burglary, repeated cases in which he had escaped from custody of the minors and a request for his detention on the part from his mother.
A high school freshman at the time, Harris was transferred from a juvenile facility to his home in West Baltimore – and disappeared shortly thereafter.

A week later, Caprio was dead.
Three other teenagers, identified as Harris's accomplices, pleaded guilty to the crime of murder and should be sentenced in September. Authorities accuse them of having robbed a house when Caprio was executed in the street.

Under Maryland law, if a person is killed during a burglary, his accomplices can be sued.
