It was a bear.
"I've heard footsteps, and I've heard Tupperware open up very loudly and aggressively," said 15-year-old Hayes Sherman. "The refrigerator started ringing because it was open too long.
"I was really scared, I did not really know what to do, I was watching TV with my friend and I turned off the TV, we both went to the sliding door to hold it in place so that the bear can not ". t enter. "
A Nest camera in the living room captured the moment of Goldilocks. The black bear stood on its hind legs, sniffing and rummaging in the refrigerator of the family cabin in Truckee, California, around 12:30 pm Saturday.
The bear broke the Tupperware to eat taco meat, Hayes said. Two pints of ice Ben and Jerry's – the Half Baked and The Tonight Dough flavors – and some crackers were also on the menu.
Hayes said he had heard many stories that bears were entering the private gated community near Lake Tahoe. The family had a problem with bears the year before, when they discovered that one of them had torn more than a dozen mosquito nets in the house.
Saturday morning, Hayes' mother and cousin were sleeping upstairs, unaware of what was happening.
The bear was knocked on the door when Hayes and his friend Bobby Harden, 15, closed it. The door shook when the bear tried to open it several times.
The teens understood that they did not have their phone with them. While he and Bobby were holding the door shaking, Hayes used his Apple watch to call his mother.
"I whispered to him:" Mom, there's a bear in the house, do not go down, "Hayes said.
Hayes hung up and called 911, while his mother called the community door and asked for a security guard.
"It was very difficult because I was whispering the 911 under my watch in a very dark room while trying to keep the door closed to prevent the bear from coming in," he said. Hayes.
It took 13 minutes for the police to arrive, but it took an hour to Hayes "because it was so scary".
His mother, Susan Mohun, said she was fighting against all the cravings for running down the stairs.
"It's the worst scenario as a parent to have a bear between you and your kids.I'm glad I did not run downstairs because that would have probably stirred the bear," he said. Mohun said.
At first, Mohun said that she did not believe her son.
"I saw the doors of my car open and I heard the refrigerator alarm emit a loud beep and realized that it 's okay. had two bad signs, "she said.
The bear came out through the front door and lingered in the driveway, the sheriff's office said. Prero fired a warning shot of his shotgun to chase the bear.
"We went out and we went to take her in the arms and we took a picture with her because we were so grateful that she came to save us," said Hayes.
The teens had left the garage door open, which they said they would never do in bear country again.
"In Bear Country, we learned a very valuable lesson: always lock your windows, your doors, your garage doors and your car doors," said Hayes.
The sheriff's office said that bears are common in the area and residents can do some things to stay safe.
"MPs have responded to numerous calls about bears in the Tahoe area in recent weeks and wish to remind our owners and visitors to lock the doors of their cars and all the doors of residences," writes the text on Facebook. "Also, do not leave food in cars, bears have a very developed sense of smell and they will find it, even behind locked car doors!"
For Mohun, it is an experience that she will never forget.
"It was one of the most frightening moments of my parental life, but thank goodness everything went well," she said.
