TOPEKA, Kan. – A major and dangerous tornado struck Tuesday west of Kansas City, Kansas, and was heading toward a populous and popular entertainment and shopping district, the National Weather Service announced.
The NWS has launched a "tornado emergency" in the region known as Legends Outlets, near Kansas Speedway, where NASCAR races are held.
Damage reports were not immediately available.
The NWS then extended the tornado warning to the entire Kansas City area, including the Missouri side.
"KC's heart is in this tornado warning! It's a dangerous situation. TAKE SHIP NOW!" the NWS Kansas City office tweeted.
The tornado is part of an extreme weather system in the central United States, which caused a tornado for eight consecutive days.
