FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Love at first sight set fire to a Florida Power and Light substation in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, powering more than 20,000 homes in Broward County, authorities said.
A spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department said the fire began around 8 pm at 400 Northeast Sixth Avenue. The spokesman said the firefighters had mastered the fire.
Police warned drivers to stay off the road because many traffic lights were not working.
"We reacted tonight to a fire in a downtown power plant, the blackouts are widespread, our intervention has been coordinated and will continue overnight until the problem is solved," said Chris. Lagerbloom, Fort Lauderdale City Manager.
Florida Power and Light said the crews were working to restore power. At 10:30 pm, approximately 14,000 households were without electricity. Thunderstorms moved across the county on Tuesday night.
The neighbors said they heard several explosions just before the fire.
"Boom, then the lights went out," Lear Martinez told Christian De La Rosa, Section 10.
Mobile phone videos showed great flames and a huge plume of black smoke over the city.
"It was a bit scary because it was very intense and the flames were going so high," said Shawn Williams resident.
At the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the opening night of the musical "Dear Evan Hansen" was canceled because of the fire. The center said in a tweet that he was working to reprogram the show.
