Joseph Gilbert Solano, deputy sheriff of Southern California, shot and wounded on Monday while he was eating at a fast food restaurant, has died, officials said.
Solano, a 13-year-old deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, died Wednesday afternoon surrounded by his family.
Rhett Nelson, a 30-year-old man from Utah, whose family has reported the disappearance, has been identified as the allegedly armed man, investigators said. He was arrested one day after the shooting when his father called on the authorities to return him.

"We have the suspect in custody," sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Nelson was suspected of having entered a Jack in the Box restaurant in the Alhambra, east of Los Angeles, and having shot Solano to the head.
The 50-year-old MP was on leave at the time. Paramedics took him to hospital in serious condition and the doctors gave him vital care, Villanueva said.
Solano was not wearing anything that could identify him as a law enforcement officer and investigators said the shooting appeared to be random.
He added that there was "no prior knowledge, there is no indication that he knew that the person was a law enforcement officer".

In a May 30 post on Facebook, Nelson's father said his son "has been abused by opiates and that he's been healthy for about six months, but we know how terrible it is. We pray for his safe return.
The Salt Lake Tribune stated that Nelson had no violent criminal history in Utah, but that he had previously pleaded guilty to driving with a "measurable amount" of controlled substance in his body.
Solano had recently been assigned to the Ministry's Guard Division. Villanueva described him as a family man appreciated by all who worked with him.
"Not only have I lost a father figure, but a best friend," Solano's daughter-in-law told reporters Wednesday, while she held back her tears. "I would like to thank all the people who supported us, sent us prayers and the whole law."
At the press conference, his son also felt emotion when he called Solano "a very good father".
Solano 's girlfriend called the attack "senseless tragedy" and thanked the forces of the order to have "apprehended the author".
