MotoE is the electric equivalent of the MotoGP moto race and sanctioned by the FIM.

Officially known as the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, the series of races welcomes 11 teams and 18 drivers.

The electric sport bikes used in MotoE are specially modified versions of the Energica Ego supplied by the Italian manufacturer of Energica electric sport bikes.

The inaugural season was scheduled to start in May alongside the FIM MotoGP. The 18 bikes were all on the Jerez circuit in Spain for their second full test before the runner of the season.

However, the catastrophic fire could ring the end of the season before it even begins.

Many people (including myself) were extremely excited to see the MotoE present motorcycle racing alongside MotoGP. It was an opportunity to show the world how electric motorcycles can compete. With their high-end torque and acceleration, the races were certainly exhilarating.

Energica does not have an incredibly large production – no electric motorcycle manufacturer does it. We are still in the early stages of producing electric motorcycles, even though companies like Zero have been around for more than a decade.

I seriously hope that Energica will be able to provide a new motorcycle field to these teams and that the equipment and tools that they have lost will be replaceable. With all their computers destroyed too, let's hope everyone was backing up regularly.

Finally, we must address the elephant in the room. Although no one yet knows where the fire has started, suspicions are likely to threaten the bike's batteries. While this may be the case, it is also possible that other electronic devices, such as high-powered chargers, have been the cause, or even old-fashioned negligence, such as throwing a butt of cigarette in the wrong place. In the absence of conventional gas stations, maybe someone would become lazy.

And it is not beyond possibility that it is a criminal arson. There is no shortage of e-haters on the Internet, but hopefully this is not the case here.

I think that because of the rare fires of electric vehicle batteries, we will have to wait and avoid condemning the motorcycles so early. We will come back with updates as soon as we have more information.
