According to the police, 10 teenagers who went to an evening in a social housing complex in New York ended up in the hospital after someone else threw a caustic substance from above.

Authorities were investigating Sunday's injuries Saturday night in a courtyard on Third Street in Manhattan's East Village.

Victims are between 15 and 18 years old and have reported burns or skin irritation. The police do not yet know where the substance – possibly a cleaning product for evacuation or something similar – was thrown away.

Valerie Vail told The New York Times that her daughter had been burned in the back, chest and arms. Her daughter is a sophomore high school student.

The newspaper indicates that residents have called the police to complain about the noise of the big party.
