The Fairmont Hotel is one of many hotels filled with Crunchyroll Participants at the Expo

The Farimont Hotel in San Jose, California, evacuated three floors after a chemical used in apparent suicide also sickened several employees and guests. The hotel is one of the many buildings adjacent to the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, where Crunchyroll Expo is currently taking place this weekend. Authorities closed Market Street between San Carlos and San Fernando while the investigation was continuing.

The Mercury News reported that an individual had used a toxic chemical during the suicide attempt. The local fire department arrived at the hotel around 10 am after the staff discovered a woman who died on the 19th floor and smelled a chemical odor. The chemical was not identified, but eight employees and guests were treated at the hotel before being transported to the hospital.

Captain Mitch Matlow of the San Jose Fire Department said The Mercury News that injuries are not considered life threatening. Affected individuals reported feeling dizzy, unconscious or breathless. The odor of the chemical smelled like a rotten egg smell, letting Matlow believe that it was possibly acting as a hydrogen sulfide.

The hotel's ventilation system was closed after the 19th, 20th and 21st floors were evacuated to contain the chemical for the investigation. The lobby of the hotel and the shops located on the first floor still work. Fire trucks, ambulances and a truck of hazardous materials responded to the call.
