A conservative student activist from the University of California at Berkeley was reportedly assaulted on Tuesday while he was recruiting new members to the Turning Point USA group, UCPD said in a statement.

Hayden Williams, the victim recruiting at a table on Upper Sproul Plaza, was approached by two men and a fight soon followed. When Williams started recording the verbal altercation with his phone, a physical fight began.

"A physical confrontation ensued when one of the men slapped the phone in the victim's hand," said the UCPD. "The suspect then flipped the table where the victim was and the two men fought on the phone. During the incident, the suspect punched the victim several times, causing injuries to the eyes and nose. A student who witnessed the fight called the campus police, but the suspect escaped before their arrival.

The report does not say what was said between Williams and the suspect before the videotaped video, but most of what happened during the fight was filmed.

In the video, the suspect described Williams as "racist b — h" and "f-kin c-t". While they were facing each other, the video shows the suspect at the back and gives Williams a punch. stroke. At one point in the video, the suspect said that he should "shoot" at the conservative activist.

One of Turning Point USA's missions is to "effectively fight intolerance and bias against conservatives in higher education".

A letter from the Chancellor's office to U.C. Berkeley said the behavior of the suspect on Tuesday was "intolerable and that it does not belong here".

"Make no mistake, we strongly condemn violence and harassment of any kind," said Chancellor Carol Christ in a statement. "This kind of behavior is intolerable and has no place here. Our commitment to freedom of expression and belief is unwavering. "

The suspect has not been identified by the university and the Chancellor's office is not aware of his links or affiliations with the school.

UC Berkely's campus is known for its clashes dating back to the 1960s.
