In a popular act of justice, a man was beaten to death after attempting to steal a car with three children inside, according to Philadelphia police.

The 54-year-old man left with the car while the children's father and mother were in a shop on Thursday night, police said. The parents chased the vehicle on foot and took out the carjacker when it was stuck in traffic.

The thief assaulted the father and escaped, but a large crowd arrested the suspect and beat him, police said.

The suspect was declared dead at the Temple University Hospital.

The police are investigating and still did not make any arrests on Friday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said the prosecutors were waiting for the police to complete the investigation before commenting.
