Pikachu, a beloved housewife who died in January as a result of a complication following a battle against diabetes, will take off.
Owner Steve Munt plans to send Pikachu ash into space, according to Space.com – a strange tribute that will make Pikachu the first cremated cat to enter orbit.
All aboard
The Celestis Pets Memorial Service, a branch of the Celestis Human Space Commemoration Society, will be calling Pikachu to the cosmos.
Munt currently raises funds via a GoFundMe help pay Pikachu's $ 5,000 bill, but he said Space.com that he had already bought the ticket for a launch "in the next 18 months".
Shooting star
Celestis Pets has already put into orbit the cremated remains of two dogs. The company says the ashes will stay until they vaporize when they enter the atmosphere. The remains of a cat or a dog will be too small to be seen, but the company poetically assimilates the vaporization to a shooting star crossing the sky.
"I wanted Pikachu to be first," said Munt Space.com, saying that he wanted to "continue his legacy of exploring and show the world that a cat is just as worthy as a dog's special homage".
