A dead sailor, another hospitalized during a shooting at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia – United States.

A sailor is dead and another hospitalized in a domestic shootout Friday morning in a parking lot at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia, officials said.

A sailor shot a woman with a handgun several times around 6:45 am in the parking lot of Strike Fighter Squadron 37, Hangar 145 at the Virginia Beach base, according to navy officials. Security forces responded to the shooting and fatally shot dead the seafarer.

The marinière was transported to the Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital with multiple nonfatal bullet wounds, according to a press release published in the Mid-Atlantic Marine region. The sailors were members of Strike Fighter Squadron 37.

The incident ended five minutes later, said Capt. Chad Vincelette, commander of NAS Oceana.

The shooting forced the base to lock temporarily, which was lifted at 0740 and the base resumed normal operations. The Naval Criminal Investigation Service is investigating this incident.

The investigation focused on the basic policy on the lack of weapons and how the seafarer was able to get a weapon on the base is part of the investigation, said Vincelette. The base security service "regularly conducts random and periodic inspections of prohibited items".

In addition to the security of the base, Virginia Beach police, firefighters and emergency teams responded to the incident.

"I would like to thank these agencies and my team for resolving the situation quickly and professionally," said Vincelette.

The NAS Oceana is the main base for the planes on the east coast of the Navy and is home to F / A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets, according to the base's website. The base, including Dam Neck Annex, has about 10,500 active naval members, about 10,000 family members and 4,500 civilian personnel.
