Passengers were praying and trying to send text messages to family members shortly before a Delta Air Lines flight landed emergency on North Carolina.

"After hearing the boom, we saw all this smoke getting into the cabin, and that's when we really started to panic," said WMAR, CNN's affiliate, the passenger. "He started to slow down a bit, he started to heat up (and) the air was cut off."

Nearly 150 passengers on Delta flight 1425 flew from Atlanta to Baltimore on Monday, while one of the aircraft's engines had a problem, the airline said.

A video recorded by a passenger shows how a metal nose cone bounced into the engine when the plane was in the air.

The passengers stated that they were over an hour into the flight when the captain told them that they were planning an emergency landing.

"I just got out my phone and I knew I did not have any service, but I just texted to my mother … I like you," WMAR said on Porch's boyfriend, Tyler Kreuger.

A passenger who spoke to CNN said that she had fallen asleep shortly after takeoff but that she had been awakened by a thud, "like a rattling sound".

"After, the cabin was filled with smoke and the traffic signs went out and we felt something was burning, everyone was confused, nobody knew what was going on," said the passenger. "The flight attendants told us how to prepare for the landing and kept everyone calm."

The MD-88 aircraft landed unhindered at approximately 2:20 pm at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said.

"I am very grateful to the crew and pilots for letting us land safely," said the passenger at CNN.

After landing, passengers were booked on other flights to Baltimore. Delta said the aircraft engine had been replaced and the plane was due back on Wednesday morning.

The airline's maintenance team in Atlanta should evaluate the damaged part.
