RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) –

A judge set a $ 1 million bail to a man accused of firing an Ohio sheriff's deputy, causing serious burns when he tried to stop him under a warrant for arrest.

Jay Brannon, 45, appeared in court Friday afternoon in Ravenna after being charged with attempted murder and arson.

The Record-Courier reports that Sheriff David Doak of Portage County has stated that Sgt. James Acklin was burned up to 20% when Brannon set fire to a container containing flammable liquid and threw it on him. That happened Thursday in a garage in Rootstown Township, 90 km south of Cleveland.

A message asking for comment was left to Brannon's attorney.

Two deputies were treated for smoke inhalation.

Doak says that Acklin is 70 days from his retirement.
