If you fancy a bit of a magical escape right now, A discovery of witches“The return is perfectly timed. Based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls novels, this contagious fantasy series centers on Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a historian forced to embrace her magical powers after finding a bewitched manuscript in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. When it premiered in 2018, the first season certainly cast a spell on viewers by following Diana’s flourishing relationship with brooding vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode).
The second season features a handful of new characters, including Gallowglass, a sculptural vampire played by COBRA and Outlander actor Steven Cree. Here he and Palmer explain why A discovery of witches is just the thing for those grim winter months.
It’s the perfect escape from lockdown
“You’re going to be transported to an entirely different world with this show – it’s fantasy,” Cree says. “So I think right now, with everything going on in the real world, people are really going to respond to it.”
Everything has been taken up a notch since the first season
“The character development is really strong. The sets are epic. We have an amazing production designer who built this amazing backlot, ”says Palmer. “And I think the stories are just more complex, adventurous, romantic, dark and thrilling. I think in all aspects of the show the audience will be really excited to see how high they are.
The action takes place in a whole different era
“The majority of season two is set in the Elizabethan era, so we’re 400 years back,” Cree says. “It’s a perfect fit for the show in a way because I think people associate magic and werewolves and witches around this era, so that sounds fair.”
Cree also points out that the new setting “means there are a lot of new characters, including mine” and reassures fans of the first season that “we also have episodes set in the current period”.
You will see a new side of Diana
“I love Diana’s trip,” says Palmer. “You know, she started the first season as a reluctant witch who has absolutely no control over her powers and abilities. But then in season two, she really starts to hone and develop her abilities. She actually becomes quite proficient with her magic.
Palmer also says that because A Discovery of Witches was renewed for a second and third season before season two went into production, the series “really got to marinate with these characters.”
“Knowing that we had two seasons was really such a safety blanket,” she adds. “We knew the story didn’t end with this season, so there were just more opportunities to dive into [story] arcs. “
The character of Cree will add a touch of lightness
“I think it’s clear from his very first scene that Gallowglass is a fun character,” Cree says. “I think he also brings out the fun side [Goode’s character] Matthew. Gallowglass is extremely loyal to Matthew and the Clairmont family in general, but at the same time, he walks a lot to the beat of his own drum. So although Matthew is his uncle, Gallowglass has no problem telling him some personal truths.
Overall, Cree describes Gallowglass as “kind of a lightweight foil to Matthew’s more intense darkness and, finally, blood rage.”
Oh, and watch out for the rowing scene, which was hard to film
“I almost broke,” Cree remembers neutrally. “Yeah, he almost pooped his Elizabethan outfit one day,” Palmer adds. “He got pretty sick on set and I saw his face turn white and I was like, ‘Guys, I really think there’s something wrong with him, he’s not making it up. it!’ ‘
“It was very, very, very hot and I was dressed in leather on a rowboat,” Cree continues. “It was such a busy day and there were about 200 extras around and I had a sudden crappy stroke. There were a few times when, literally, as they were screaming “action!” I had to run around the corner to throw up vomit, then come back to finish the scene. It couldn’t have been worse. But despite that, I think the scene came out really strong!
