A doctor who had begun cardiopulmonary resuscitation of the woman murdered Saturday during a shootings in a synagogue in Southern California fainted when it became clear that the person what he was trying to save was his wife.

Sixty-year-old Lori Gilbert-Kaye died of her injuries during the shooting at Chabad of Poway, near San Diego. Three others were injured.

It is thought that Gilbert-Kaye was thrown in front of Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, possibly saving his life. Goldstein was injured after being shot in the hand.

The San Diego Union-Tribune announced that Gilbert-Kaye's husband, a doctor, was in the synagogue when the shots began.

Faithful people called him to help the victims and he started doing CPR until he realized that it was his wife's, said the Dr. Roneet Lev to the newspaper.

The husband then fainted.

Lev said that Gilbert-Kaye went to the synagogue near San Diego to offer Jewish prayer for the dead – known as "Kaddish" for his recently deceased mother, the newspaper reported.

"God has chosen her to die to send a message because she is such an incredible person," Lev said. "He took it for a higher purpose to send this message to fight against anti-Semitism."

John Earnest, 19, was arrested after the shooting. Police said that he had burst and opened fire with "AR-type weapon".

An online manifesto written by a person identifying as Earnest indicates that he was inspired by mass shooting in two New Zealand mosques that killed 50 Muslims last month.
