According to the authorities, a pit bull reportedly killed a 1-year-old boy during an unprovoked attack in the child's home.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office said the boy died Friday in a "terrible tragedy" in Granite Bay, about 40 km northeast of Sacramento.
Officials said MPs responded at home around 3 pm Friday and rushed the child to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
Authorities did not publish the boy's name.
The dog has been seized by the animal control and detectives are investigating the death.
