Satharith By gets up at 2 am to start making donuts since opening her shop last week in Missouri City, Texas.
But the business at the store, Billy's Donuts, near Houston, had been slow. So, to increase sales, By's son, Billy, has posted on Twitter.
"My father is sad because no one comes to his new donut shop", Billy By wrote on the site Saturday, accompanied by a crying emoji and photos of his father at the counter.
In a few hours, Billy's message had been retweeted thousands of times and the shop was exhausted. On Monday, the tweet had more than 300,000 retweets – including by the actor James Woods, the Twitter company account and Filmmaker Casey Neistat – and more than 600,000 tastes.
"I was just trying to help my father earn more business through my friends, but other people ended up seeing him too," said Billy By.
The affiliate of NBC, KPRC, went to the store on Sunday morning and said that he was "slammed with customers who buy sweets, sodas and other items."
And in a Sunday update, By wrote on Twitter: "We have completely sold donuts and kolaches! You are all incredible. I can not thank everyone for coming out to support local businesses. It means so much to my family. "
The By family is not new to donuts: Satharith By came to the United States as a refugee from Cambodia and opened a donut shop in Southern California about 20 years ago, said Billy By. .
The family sold the store to a family member when By's mother became ill a few years earlier. When she recovered, the family opened the new store in Texas.
"He came here about 20 or 30 years ago to find a better life and that's it," said Billy By, referring to his father.
"At the moment, I am very happy," said Satharith By.
"Thank you for the community," he added later. "And thank you for the guest who comes."
