Authorities announced Monday that an Iowa Public Security Department employee, his wife and their two sons, found dead at their homes this weekend, had been victims of a murder -suicide.
After the body of Chandrasekhar Sunkara, 44, Lavanya Sunkara, 15, 10, and 10, was found at his home in West Des Moines on Saturday morning. no threat to the community, but they did not say why.
On Monday, police said the autopsies had revealed that the boys and their mother had been homicide victims and that Chandrasekhar Sunkara had committed suicide. The authorities gave no other details.
Police said Sunday that other family members, two adults and two children, were staying at their homes as guests. When the bodies were discovered, one of the family members, whom the police described as "survivor", ran outside to seek help and found a passerby who called 911 .
The Ministry of Public Security said Sunday that Chandrasekhar Sunkara, known as Chandra, was a civilian IT professional in the agency's technology services bureau.
Shrikar Somayajula, co-owner and partner of A Grade Ahead, an after-school enrichment academy in Des Moines, said the boys, whose names were not revealed because they were minors, were star students who represented the school at the national level. School competitions and "wanted to go to one of the Ivy League elite colleges."
Somayajula told WHO, Des Moines, affiliated with NBC, that "the family was a very friendly family, so it's really painful," Somayajula said.
