The victim was his daughter.
Joshua Lee Burgess, 32, told the regulator that he was there to surrender after killing someone in his home in Monroe, about 20 miles southeast of Charlotte, according to a statement. Union County Sheriff's Office Press Release.
The sheriff's office identified the victim as Burgess's 15-year-old daughter, Zaria Joshalyn Burgess, who visited her home this weekend, the statement said.
A reporter from the news channel said that there was a start when the allegations were detailed by officials in court.
Zaria's cousin, Dytaysha Wadsworth, described the teenager at the WSOC as friendly.
"She was the kind of kid coming into a room … or into a house and saying," Hey everyone "- just want to make everyone smile," Wadsworth told the branch.
Wadsworth struggles to understand why his cousin was killed, WSOC reported.
"She was so young and nobody deserves to leave this world like that," Wadsworth said, according to the news channel. "Especially by someone who, he thought, was going to protect them and be there for them."
Burgess has received a court-appointed lawyer and is scheduled to appear for the next time in September, the WSOC reported.
He is charged with first-degree murder without engagement, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office website.
CNN has not yet been able to determine who represents Burgess.
