The 37-year-old man had just been released Thursday from the St. Lucie County Detention Center in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he was charged with robbery, according to an affidavit relating to his arrest.
According to the affidavit, after his release, Lewis then began to bypass the prison parking lot "acting suspiciously and checking the doors of the vehicle".
The surveillance video showed that Lewis was examining cars and opening the door of a silver vehicle, according to the affidavit. The report states that Lewis entered the vehicle on the driver's side and sat in the car for about two and a half minutes. He then came out of the vehicle and walked the length of the field, checking the vehicles en route while looking through the windows or lifting the doorknobs to see if they were unsecured, says the officer. affidavit.
While Lewis was in the parking lot, an officer approached him. He told the officer that he was "waiting for his girlfriend," according to the affidavit.
The officer who made the arrest stated in the affidavit that, when Lewis was approached, questioned and finally arrested, he handed the officer a brown paper bag containing elements of a vehicle. The items on offer included an iPhone 7, four packs of cigarettes, a lighter, a Visa debit card, a Florida driver's license and $ 547 in cash.
Lewis was arrested for burglary, armed robbery and possession of stolen property. He was brought back inside the prison.
CNN contacted a lawyer who represented Lewis in a previous case but did not receive an immediate response. It was not possible to determine whether Lewis was represented by this lawyer or by another lawyer in the last case.
Maria Entner, a spokeswoman for the Saint Lucia County Sheriff's Office, said Lewis was released – again – the same day, but this time, the deputy ministers ensured that a person is present to look for it.
