A flesh-eating bacteria almost kills the man from Pinellas County – History

– The fisherman Mike Walton, of the hospital, returns home and heals a wound after almost losing his life in front of a flesh eating bacteria.

It started with a minor accident a few weeks ago, while he was fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, near Ozona, Florida.

"I had been hanging my hand in the afternoons without thinking about it," Walton said. "It was amazing how fast it was spreading."

Small blisters on his hands then turned black. After a few days, he knew that the antibiotics the doctor had given him were not working. He went to the emergency department in the middle of the night.

"They admitted me from the outset and did it for about an hour or half an hour," he said.

Walton says the doctors told him that he had a very rare flesh-eating bacteria. Right now, they are working to determine which strain.

"When I woke up and [saw] my hand still tied, I was happy, "he said.

However, it was much more serious than his hand or his arm.

"They said that in a few hours my arm would be in my chest and I would not be there. There was no way to save me, "Walton said.

He is now back home after three surgeries and a week at the hospital.

Walton is a construction worker, now unemployed. This is where his fellow fishers from Ozona Fish Camp come in.

Eric Mclendon says that they collect money online and organize tournaments for the benefit of their friends.

"Everyone contributed, everyone participated, everyone wanted to help him. I mean, he helps everyone! That's the kind of person he is, "said Mclendon at FOX 13 on Monday.

Mike says he is lucky to have such good friends and even more lucky to be alive.

"I'm just happy to be here," Walton said. "I can not wait to go back fishing and not to lie about it!"
