DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Authorities have released a video of the arrest of a 15-year-old boy from Florida, who reportedly threatened to kill at least seven people in a high school.
Officials of the Volusia County Sheriff interviewed the boy and his mother outside their home near Daytona Beach last Friday and posted a video of their discussion to highlight the consequences of threats to the school.
The boy, whose name is not used by the Associated Press, told investigators he was joking when he posted the message on Discord using the false name Dalton Barnhart. In it, he promised to bring his father's "M15" to Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach and "kill at least seven people".
The FBI on Thursday alerted Volusia County authorities and MPs arrested the teenager the next morning.
"Joking or not, that kind of comment is a crime under the law," writes the sheriff's office in his Facebook message.
In the video, the MP told the mother that the boy had made a written threat to carry out a mass fire.
"But he's just a little kid playing a video game," she protests. "These kids say things like that all the time. It's a joke for them. It's a game. And it's so fake. I hate this game. "
According to the deputy minister, law enforcement officers are now spending a lot of time checking for similar threats.
"How do we know that he will not be like Parkland's kid, or that he will not be like the kid who shot Sandy Hook?" We do not know it, "he says.
"There is a law in Florida stating that you can not threaten in writing to provoke mass shootings," he says, explaining that his son would be charged with a second- or third-degree crime.
"It's just a little boy," said the mother, moved. "He did nothing wrong. Yes, he is 15 years old, but he is still a little boy. He's not one of those crazy people who do things … he should not be treated as if he's a terrorist or something like that because he made a stupid statement about a stupid video game. "
Member asks if there is a firearm at home. She says yes.
"Okay, he has his hands and feet and he can catch your gun and go do something," said the deputy minister.
The mother says that her son would not do such a thing.
"We do not know," says the deputy minister.
"It's the world we live in, where people think it's funny to say that I'm going to kill people at school," the MP adds, before taking the boy into juvenile detention. "He did the charge, he will face the consequences."
