SARASOTA, Florida (WWSB / Gray News) – Jackie Jozaitis, 16, said she was attacked by a shark on Friday while she was on vacation on Amelia Island, just north of Jacksonville, in northeastern Florida.

Jozaitis stated that she had been doing bodyboard the next morning when she had been bitten at the heel and ankle.

The schoolgirl said that she had not seen the shark but had felt the jaw break. It was at this moment that she ran towards the shore, shouting for help.

She added that her friend had been able to help her by exerting pressure on the wound as the crews rushed to the scene.

At first she did not know what had attacked her before saying that she had seen teeth marks on her heel and ankle.

The scary moment has taken an educational turn for Jozaitis as she says she has learned a valuable lesson since.

"The most important thing for me was to make sure of your environment, to know what was happening around you, because if I decided not to go to sunrise, find out that the Sharks feed at sunrise and we do not know it, "she says.

Jozaitis has since received eight stitches. During this time she will have to use crutches and a wheelchair to get around.

But more importantly, she says she'll be fine in a few weeks.
