A Florida woman says her father died of a flesh-eating bacteria less than 48 hours after entering the water

A Tennessee man died just 48 hours after catching a flesh-eating bacteria in Florida waters after his daughter said that the hospital where he had been treated did not heed his warnings that he had contracted necrotizing fasciitis.

Cheryl Bennett Wiygul, a resident of Okaloosa County, said her parents had come from Memphis to spend several days with her last week.

During their stay, the family spent several days in the water, including a beach in Destin, a creek and a marsh in Boggy Bayou. Wiygul said he had heard of people in Florida recently caught by a flesh-eating bacterium. She took extra precautions with her father, who had already been diagnosed with cancer.

"When my parents came to town, I was fond of Neosporin and liquid bandage," she said in a Facebook message Wednesday. "My father had no open wounds. We took precautions and we were good, so I thought.

Wiygul said his father started complaining about fever, chills and cramps around 4am Saturday around 4am. The family decided that it would be best if he was treated in Tennessee, where doctors were already aware of his previous health problems.

They left later in the morning, where the symptoms worsened. He was taken to a Memphis hospital at around 8 pm

Wiygul said that while his father was putting on his hospital gown, staff noticed a "swollen black patch on his back" that had never been seen before. His mother sent him a picture and Wiygul immediately recognized what was wrong with his father.

The man's conditions deteriorated despite antibiotic treatment and by 1 am he became skeptical and code soon thereafter. He was brought back by the medical staff, but his health condition continued to deteriorate.

"My father had a lot of medical problems, but the heart was not one of them. They had to intubate it. He coded again. They said his organs were too damaged and his blood too acidic to stay alive, "said Wiygul. "He was gone Sunday afternoon."

Wiygul stated that the hospital had performed tests that confirmed that his father had contracted vibrio vulnificus, which manifested as necrotizing fasciitis.

She blamed the beaches for not publishing any notices regarding the presence of bacteria in the water, adding that her father might have been alive today if she had known the dangers.

"Less than 48 hours after getting out of the water in top form, the bacteria had destroyed it," she wrote. "I would never have taken my father into the water if there had been a bacterial alert, but I would have liked it because I did not want him to catch the stomach virus, not because I thought it would kill him. Wiygul told his father's story in the hope of shedding light on a crucial problem for which the general public lacks the most basic information.
