A gasoline tank explosion in South Los Angeles hurts 2

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Firefighters reacted to the explosion of a gas tank that resulted in the hospitalization of two people Sunday morning in South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles fire department.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of W. Slauson Avenue at approximately 7:45 am The tank was in a storage yard at the time of the explosion, making two houses damaged by a fire and one of the hospitalized victims for burns.

Officials said earlier that several people were injured, including at least one person with respiratory problems.

The flames of the 9,000-gallon tanker were propagated at the arrival of the crews. The gas leaked into the storm sewers, causing explosions in the drains and detonation of the sewer plates.

The images of the scene showed large plumes of smoke rising and dominating the downtown skyline.

About 80 firefighters were on site and were working to set up hot spots in the area.

No firefighters were injured in the blast.

W. Slauson Avenue between Main and Broadway will be closed for hours, fire officials said.
