The incident occurred in the 200 block of W. Slauson Avenue at approximately 7:45 am The tank was in a storage yard at the time of the explosion. Two houses were damaged by a fire and one of the hospitalized victims was burned.
Officials said earlier that several people were injured, including at least one person with respiratory problems.
The flames of the 9,000-gallon tanker were propagated at the arrival of the crews. The gas leaked into the storm sewers, causing explosions in the drains and detonation of the sewer plates.
The images of the scene showed large plumes of smoke rising to the sky.
About 80 firefighters were on site and were working to set up hot spots in the area.
No firefighters were injured in the blast.
Slauson Avenue was closed at the intersection of Broadway, with teams finishing clearing the area.
