The Los Angeles Dodgers announced A.J. Pollock underwent a successful surgery Thursday to remove the equipment from his right elbow. Dr. John Itamura performed the operation which, according to the club, went as planned.
The Dodgers still have not set a timetable for Pollock's recovery. Thursday's surgery was the third on his right elbow and the result of an infection in the purse.
A year after being selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2009 MLB draft, Pollock broke his right elbow and spent five months recovering. He appeared in 16 games during the Arizona Autumn League on his return in 2010.
Then, in 2016, Pollock again fractured his elbow during spring training. Another operation and an absence of five months followed. Pollock played 12 games with the Diamondbacks on his return from the season.
Pollock's second surgery required the insertion of a new plate into his elbow, as it was discovered that a screw had come loose from his first surgery. The infection that led to a third procedure comes from the material inserted three years ago.
Pollock signed a $ 55 million four-year contract with the Dodgers last January. Although he suffered injuries throughout his career, Dodgers Baseball Operations President Andrew Friedman downplayed any concerns.
Friedman's reasoning was that Pollock's story was mainly composed of impact injuries and flukes, not soft tissue injuries.
As Pollock is expected to miss at least next month, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has acknowledged that this would create more opportunities for Alex Verdugo. This will involve giving Verdugo more opportunities to cope with left-handed shots, against which he has managed so far.
Chris Taylor is also expecting an increase in playing time while he is striving to come out of a slump.
