A key member of the 1980 Olympic Ice Hockey Team was arrested on August 15 after allegedly assaulting his neighbor in Minnesota with a metal pipe after fishing, police said.

Mark Pavelich, 61, was arrested for second and third degree aggression, possession of an illegal shortened shotgun and possession of a firearm with a missing serial number, Minneapolis Star reported Tribune. He was held back instead of a $ 250,000 bail and was subjected to a mental health check.

The man who called the Cook County Sheriff's Office to report the assault told the dispatch that he had been hit by a Pavelich armed with metal poles at the home of the former hockey player after both men had spent the day fishing together. Pavelich reportedly accused the man of "drinking beer," the newspaper reported, citing a criminal complaint.

Cook County MPs said Pavelich's neighbor was "shocked" with "observable wounds and an obvious disfigurement of his leg," the Duluth News-Tribune reported, citing the complaint. The man reportedly had two cracked ribs, a bruised left kidney and fractured vertebrae.

After investigation, the authorities discovered a shotgun whose butt had been replaced by a tree branch in Pavelich's house, according to the Star Tribune. The serial number had also been removed from the gun.

A judge ordered Pavelich on Monday to undergo a mental health assessment to determine if he was mentally fit to stand trial. He is about to return to court on October 20th.

Pavelich played a key role in the "Miracle on Ice" team that defeated the Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Pavelich contributed to two goals that helped the Americans beat the Soviets, 4-3.
