A lawyer threatened to sue the Kentucky Education Ministry for looking for the names of teachers who had taken advantage of sick days to protest in front of the Capitol.

Ten school districts in Kentucky have been forced to close several times since the end of February, with teachers taking sick leave to protest the proposed Capitol bill. Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis sent a letter to these districts on Thursday asking for the name of every teacher who went sick on days when the district was forced to close.

Lawyer Mark Wohlander informed the ministry on Friday that he was preparing to file a civil rights lawsuit by the federal government for "unprecedented interference" in the constitutional rights of teachers.

Lewis said that he thought the potential lawsuit was "frivolous".
