In a letter dated October 2, 2018, Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, sent a letter to the FBI asking the agency to talk to individuals better informed about Kavanaugh. Specifically, Coons suggested that the FBI speak to Stier. The letter does not specify exactly what information Stier had, but Coons suggests to the FBI to talk to him. Stier's name in the letter is redacted in the version seen by CNN, but an assistant from Coons told CNN that he was calling Stier. An assistant familiar with the letter told CNN that the FBI had acknowledged receipt of Coons' letter at the time, but that the senator had never heard of it.

According to a Republican source familiar with the letter, Grassley and Feinstein were copied on Coons' letter to the FBI. The source notes that Stier's contact information was there but no specific allegations. In addition, the source stated that Stier had not brought the allegation directly to Grassley.
