SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – This week, a jury awarded a Californian couple over $ 2 billion in a verdict against Monsanto, a subsidiary of Bayer.
The couple says they both contracted non-Hodgkin's lymphoma because of their use of Roundup.
This is the third recent court decision regarding the company's claim to being a Roundup weed killer.
About 13,000 people sued Monsanto's parent company, Bayer AG, on behalf of Roundup.
A judge quashed a lawsuit on May 20 and ordered Bayer AG to begin mediation with the plaintiffs until next week.
In our federal court research, we found a handful of lawsuits against Monsanto in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota by Roundup-exposed people who had developed the same type of blood cancer, including a landscaper from Sioux Falls.
Gerry Anderson He has been a professional landscaper since 1980. He used Roundup in its liquid form.
"(I) I never thought about it, just like a lot of other things, you just do it," Anderson said.
Then, in 2010, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that starts in the blood cells.
"I always tend to attribute your environment to a lot of things, chemicals contribute to it," Anderson said.
The lawsuits against Monsanto / Bayer were presumed to be a scientific fraud, claiming that the company had manipulated its own research to keep the risk of cancer secret.
A UN-sponsored scientific body said Roundup was probably causing cancer.
However, the EPA reaffirmed last month that glyphosate, the active ingredient found in the herbicide, did not pose "any risk to public health".
Anderson had a bone marrow transplant in 2011. But four years ago, his cancer recurred and he continues to receive chemotherapy once a week.
"It's about you because you still have to deal with it," said Anderson.
The Anderson trial was dismissed by a federal courtbut he could re-deposit. He says that money does not interest him, he only wants to make sure that others do not get sick.
"The main thing I would like to see, is that they would do more for security," Anderson said.
Anderson ensures that when Roundup is used today in his nursery, workers wear gloves and masks.
KELOLAND Investigates also found another lawsuit brought by a man currently living in Arizona.
Ray Harry says that he was exposed to Roundup in Alcester, South Dakota, from 1988 to 2006, and then to Iowa. According to court documentsA non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was diagnosed in Ray in September 2017. Ray's combination was transferred to California with the others.
