About 35 minutes before Monday’s scheduled practice, the Flyers announced it had been called off.
According to the Flyers, the team was “advised by the National Hockey League to resume training on Tuesday”.
Had the Flyers taken the ice Monday, it would have ended the club’s six-day shutdown imposed by NHL COVID protocols. The Flyers have been out of service since last Tuesday when their game against the Capitals was postponed. They trained last Monday at the Capital One Arena before heading home on Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to last Tuesday’s contest, the Flyers’ games from Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from last week have also been postponed.
The Flyers ‘plan to resume training on Tuesday matches the Sabers’ seven-day break earlier this month. If the Flyers practice Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET as scheduled, their hiatus will also have reached seven days. Since February 9, Buffalo has been able to train despite seven to nine players on the NHL’s COVID protocol list since that date.
Monday’s decision could be that the Flyers and the NHL erred in caution, officially making the shutdown seven days. The team still has Tuesday and Wednesday to train if all goes well. Again, time will tell. Nothing seems set in stone at this point.
For a third straight day on Sunday, the Flyers had seven players on the NHL’s COVID protocol roster. Travis Sanheim was taken off the list and Travis Konecny was added to it. The league updates the roster around 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET daily, so Monday’s update has yet to be released.
There are a number of factors that explain why a player may be placed on the COVID protocol list. A player absent due to the COVID protocol does not necessarily mean the player has tested positive for the coronavirus. According to league protocols, all teams receive daily COVID-19 PCR lab tests. The league also recently instituted rapid point-of-service testing on game days.
The Flyers’ next scheduled game is Thursday against the Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center. The team is then scheduled to travel to Stateline, Nev., To face the Bruins on Sunday in one of the NHL’s outdoor games in Lake Tahoe this weekend.
As of Monday afternoon, those plans were still in place. NHL Assistant Commissioner Bill Daly released the following statement to NBC10:
“We have been in close communication with the Flyers over the past seven to 10 days regarding testing status and player availability issues. We continue to want the Flyers to resume their regular season schedule on Thursday and play in Sunday’s game. in Lake Tahoe. We will of course continue to actively monitor the situation. “
