A look at the situation for coaching staff after Lions hire Mark DeLeone away from Chicago

ALLEN PARK – The Detroit Lions have officially announced the hiring of Anthony Lynn as offensive coordinator, giving the club a whole new set of coordinators under the leadership of incoming coach Dan Campbell.

Lynn, the former Chargers head coach, replaces Darrell Bevell as offensive player. Dave Fipp was announced as the special teams coordinator on Tuesday night, while Aaron Glenn was hired to replace Cory Undlin as the defensive coordinator.

All three coordinators are former players, as are Campbell – a tight blocking end who spent three seasons at Detroit – as well as a few new hires at the front office. This includes Deputy Managing Director Ray Agnew, Senior Personnel Manager John Dorsey, both of which were officially announced today. Dorsey also has general management experience, holding that position in Kansas City and Cleveland, both of which made the playoffs this year with rosters he’s largely built. He also wrote Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield in consecutive years.

So, although the Lions have hired a GM for the first time (Brad Holmes) and a full-time head coach for the first time (Campbell), they have surrounded the two with a wealth of experience, including between the lines.

“I think playing the game makes a difference,” said owner Sheila Ford Hamp. “I think the players will respect what (Campbell) says because they know he’s been there, and he has. So, yeah, I think that’s definitely a positive and a positive factor.

There is still work to be done on staff, but the Lions would meet a need by hiring Mark DeLeone as a linebacker coach. DeLeone came as a young quality control coach to Kansas City – while Dorsey was at the front office – before taking on the linebacker job in Chicago in 2019, where he helped players like Roquan Smith.

DeLeone decided to leave Chicago after being dismissed from the position of defensive coordinator when Chuck Pagano retired. Coach Sean Desai got the job instead.
