LOS ANGELES (AP) – A sheriff's deputy from Los Angeles County, shot in a fast-food restaurant, died on Wednesday, the sheriff said.

Joseph Gilbert Solano, who had been kept alive, died Wednesday afternoon from Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

The medical staff worked day and night for two days "to try a miracle, but unfortunately it did not succeed," he said.

A man entered Monday in a Jack in the Box in the suburb of Alhambra and shot Solano in the head while he was waiting for his food order at the counter, authorities said.

Solano was not in uniform and nothing indicates that the shooter knew that he was a deputy, Villanueva said.

Nelson's family said he was suffering from mental illness and opioid addiction. It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

Investigators said Nelson was also suspected of shooting a 30-year-old man who was on a street in Los Angeles about an hour before Solano's death. The two shootings did not seem motivated and could have been random, said the authorities.

Giles said that no recent crime involving Nelson had been reported to the St. George police.

The Salt Lake Tribune stated that Nelson had no violent criminal history in Utah, but that he had previously pleaded guilty to driving with a "measurable amount" of controlled substance in his body and guilty of offenses related to alcohol.

Los Angeles authorities found a gun in Nelson's car. It was not known right away if it was Utah 's gun.
