ROCHESTER, NY – A man suspected, but eventually acquitted, of a triple murder in Rochester himself was killed and police warned the public not to draw any conclusions or reprisals since investigators had been looking for Sunday the suspect.

Jalen Everett was shot around 8 pm Saturday while I was driving a car on Dewey Avenue, near Magee Avenue. The 24-year-old was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police did not determine the motive for the shooting, which occurred two years after Everett's acquittal in his second lawsuit following the triple murder committed in front of the boys club and Rochester girls in 2015.

On Sunday, police chief La'Ron Singletary warned of rumors of reprisals and implored the public not to let the spiral of Everett's death turn into more violence.

"Many people make comparisons" between his assassination and the 2015 shootout, Singletary said at a press conference. "Until you tell us what the motive is, all the rest is pure speculation."

"Let's focus on the task ahead," he said.

Meanwhile, people gathered for a vigil near the shooting site, showed images and videos from local news channels.

Everett was one of three men charged after a gust of gunfire killed three people and injured several others in a crowd, leaving a basketball game at the Boys and Girls Club. Prosecutors said the shooting came from a vehicle in which Everett and the other two suspects were.

Everett was convicted of murder at his first trial, but a judge overturned the verdict after allegations of jury misconduct were revealed.

A second jury acquitted Everett in January 2017.

Another suspect, Johnny Blackshell Jr., was convicted and serving a life sentence. The third, Matthew Matthis, was acquitted.
