Members of the New York Terrorism Joint Working Group, made up of FBI agents and New York police detectives, began following the man and eventually arrested him.

He is not suspected of being linked to another people or to a wider plot.

The US prosecutor's office is expected to comment later on Friday.

The NYPD has sent all questions back to the FBI.

Times Square has been the scene of a few attempted attacks in recent years. In May 2017, a man dropped his car on a group of people, killing one and injuring 20 others. The suspect, Richard Rojas, was later determined to use drugs and suffer from mental illness.

The most notable example of thwarted terrorist attack in Times Square came in 2010 when two good Samaritans noticed a car smoking and alerted the authorities, who foiled the attack on the car bomb.
