A devastated family was left shaken Thursday when it was revealed that the man who had told the police that it was Timmothy Pitzen, a boy from Illinois who had been missing for eight years, was lying.
While the Pitzen family and the police were struggling to face the reality, former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes said that she thought the man, Brian Rini, 23, might be prosecuted for his actions.
Hakes, who was also the first national coordinator of the Justice Ministry's strategy on preventing child exploitation and banning them, told Fox & Friends on Friday that Rini's hoax had not only traumatized a family, but also exploited vital resources of the federal police.
"One of the things that, in my eyes, is the worst, in addition to the emotional anger of the family, is police and forensic resources that have been used to try to determine what s & rsquo; Timothy Pitzen or not, "she said. "This person should be ashamed and will probably be pursued."

The FBI has rushed to treat Rini's DNA after appearing in Kentucky, beaten and bruised, claiming to be the Pitzen, aged 13 or 14. Once his DNA was processed, it was revealed that Rini, 23, had been released from prison barely a month ago and that he had a history of fraud-related crimes.
Pitzen disappeared in 2011 after the suicide of his mother and claimed to have left his son with other people who would like and care for him. The family held a press conference Thursday after the news announcement. The man was not Timmothy, saying that the boy's father, James "was again devastated".
Timmothy's aunt, Kara Jacobs, said that learning the hoax "comes back to relive the day" Timmothy has disappeared again.

Hakey went on to say that Rini's lies with the federal authorities could certainly send him back to jail and that she hopes that he will be prosecuted.
"Lying to the authorities, lying to the FBI, obstructing justice is a crime," she said. "There may be other state and local crimes that he has committed using police resources under false pretenses."
"This is nothing less than a crook and I feel very bad about what he has done to this family," she concluded.
